Skeleton World Record Attempt

Update on the big skeleton world record.

Official Press Release

Jokers' Masquerade Fancy Dress demolishes the previous world record for the largest gathering of skeletons!

Victory cries rang out through the valleys of South Wales last night as a new Guinness World record was set by fancy dress supremo, Jokers' Masquerade. With the help of Swansea University students, Jokers' Masquerade has broken the previous record for the largest gathering of skeletons, ever!

At 11.30pm on Saturday 8th October, Jokers' Masquerade became the new holder of the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of skeletons with a staggering 2018, obliterating the previous record of 197, set by The Paul O'Grady Show in 2009.

The event was held at Swansea University Students Union, with entertainment provided by international rock band, Wheatus, and Radio 1 DJ, Matt Edmondson, and Jokers' Masquerade supplied all students with scary skeleton costumes to provide an optical delight!

Jokers' Masquerade is the holder of the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Smurfs, and the total of 2,510 remains unbeaten to this day! Donna Houguez, Marketing Manager, explains: “Jokers' Masquerade thought it would be a great idea to replicate our previous world record success using Halloween Costumes from this very topical time of year. As Jokers' Masquerade is a fancy dress company, we like to have a bit of fun and thought a room full of 2,000 dancing skeletons would make for a fantastic sight. It certainly did, and everyone involved can look back with pride that they helped create such a memorable event!”

Jokers' Masquerade, which is based in Newbury, is the UK's number 1 online fancy dress company, winning the Hitwise Best Fancy Dress Website Award and being awarded the Internet in Retail Media Group Gold Status in 2011 to date. Key to the success of the company is its ethos of exemplary customer service, biggest range and most competitive prices.

Pre Record Information

Saturday 8th of October will mark potentially the second acquisition of a Guinness World Record by Jokers' Masquerade. We are planning to break the record for the largest gathering of skeletons in a single location at once.

Previously, we attempted and successfully broke the record for the largest gathering of Smurfs. This was back in June 2009 at Oceana nightclub in Swansea, Wales. Our final total of people clad in Smurf fancy dress was 2,510, double the previous record set in Castleblayney back in 2008. Today, we are still the Guinness World Record holder of that Smurf record despite the attempt of Sony to out Smurf us back when their Smurf movie came out earlier this year. You can read more about our experience and see some pretty cool photos on our smurf record page.

Our Record Breaking Attempt

The world record attempt for the largest gathering of skeletons by Jokers' Masquerade will not be taken lightly, when we do something we do it properly. Not only are we looking to break the existing record, we are looking to absolutely destroy it. We have been in the planning stages for months now and we are about to finally see what all the hard work culminates with.

Donna Houguez, Marketing Manager explains; "As Jokers' Masquerade is one of the UK's leading fancy dress retailers, we like to have a bit of fun! We wanted to do a Halloween fancy dress themed world record and thought a room full of 2,000 dancing skeleton costumes would make for a fantastic sight!"

Our record breaking attempt will be part of an evening of fancy dress fun. Compering on the night will be the talented Radio 1 DJ Matt Edmondson, who will also be treating all those in attendance to a DJ set. There will also be a performance by New York based rock group Wheatus, who will be performing some of their hit records.

The credit for this idea as well as the previous Guinness world record success goes to founder and Managing Director of Jokers' Masquerade fancy dress Mark Lewis. Mark not only works tirelessly at the Jokers' Masquerade world headquarters based here in Newbury, Berkshire, he also offers some great ideas like this.

Mark commented that "I can't wait to see my idea come to life, this will be the second Guinness world record that Swansea University Student Union have gotten involved in and help make our world record attempt actually happen".

Mark will be at the Swansea University Student Union on the night to experience the Guinness world record atmosphere first hand, will be the lead skeleton and accept the prized certificate from the adjudicator if Jokers' Masquerade are indeed successful.

Where and When?

Jokers' Masquerade fancy dress plans to undertake this heady task on the evening of Saturday 8th October, 2011 at Swansea University Students Union in Swansea, Wales. We will be working closely with the students of Swansea University Student Union to help us get our name in the record book for a second time.

Having the Jokers' Masquerade team and a rather large group of students dressed as spooky skeletons, it only seems fitting that the record attempt should take place during the night just a few short weeks before Halloween. The time of 23:30 is when the official tabulation will happen so be sure to follow us on Twitter over on the official Jokers' Masquerade Twitter page for an up to the minute account of what is going on throughout the night.

We plan to update this very page with the record breaking news of success once we have the good news.

The Current Record

The record for the Largest Gathering of Skeletons is currently held by Channel 4's the Paul O'Grady show. It was set by the studio audience on 23rd September 2009, whereby 197 skeletons sat patiently in the audience and were counted toward the final tally. It was part of an episode that featured many record breaking attempts.
