ABBA
The former band Abba consisted of Benny Andersson from Sweden, Anni-Frid Lyngstad from Sweden (of Norwegian-German origin), Agnetha Faltskog from Sweden and Bjorn Ulvaeus from Sweden. The name Abba was formed by using the first letters of their chosen names. Their first breakthrough moment was in the 1973 Euro-vision Song Contest when they sang an English song that came third. Abba's manager Stig Anderson began planning for the next years event immediately thinking that winning the contest could be the break-through that he and his band were looking for. They were invited by Swedish television to contribute a song and decided they would go with the up-beat "Waterloo". Abba entered the national heats for the 1974 euro-vision song contest. They won the heats and went through to the finals. They won the Eurovision Song contest in 1974. This was the break-through they were looking for and their song "Waterloo" went to number one in the UK, Germany and Australia.
They continued to steadily grow in stature and had many hits with songs; "Mamma Mia", "Dancing Queen", "Knowing me, Knowing you", "Take a chance" and "Winner takes it all". Abba were highly sought after all over Europe and the rest of the world and on tours drew in extremely large crowds of screaming fans. Abba was the first pop group from mainland Europe to have success in English speaking countries all around the globe including United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. They continue to sell two to four million CD's a year worldwide. Abba are one of the worlds best selling bands having sold 370 million records.
Abbas records have now been compiled into a outstanding musical called Mamma Mia! The musical has toured world wide to great success and now even a movie has been based on it. The film did extremely well at the box office becoming the most successful Hollywood film musical of all time and the highest grossing film of all time in the UK.
Abba's songs will always remain one the most popular choices for embarrassing nights in front of the karaoke machine. To help with the embarrassment why not sing your favourite Abba song dressed as your favourite member from the band!
