Taking part in the remote destination of Lerwick in Shetland, the Up Helly Aa festival is held annually on the last Tuesday in January. Up Helly Aa day involves a series of marches and visitations, culminating in a torch-lit procession and the burning of a galley.

The Up Helly Aa Procession

Up Helly Aa is a busy day full of things to do that start to be planned immediately following the culmination of the previous event. Planned well in advance by the Guizer Jarl and his Jarl Squad they look into every detail and work tirelessly to make sure that the Up Helly Aa festival is a rousing success each and every year.

After the procession, the squads visit local schools, sports facilities and hotels, where private parties are held. At each location, each squad performs its act, which may be a tribute or homage to a television show, film, topical event, or song and dance, always in a flamboyant costume.
