Fairy Costumes & Elf Costumes
From the Tooth Fairy Costume to a Tinkerbell Costume to a Dark Rock Hard Fairy Costume, fairies come in all different shapes and sizes and because of this, so do fairy fancy dress costumes. Fairies originate from Western European folklore during the medieval times and are usually human in appearance, often with wings and have magical powers that include being able to cast spells and to influence or foresee the future.
Some of the more famous fairies include Tinkerbell, Blue Fairy from Pinocchio and the Tooth Fairy.
Tinkerbell Costumes
Tinker Bell comes from the original play and then novel of Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. The name Tinkerbell derives from the fact that she mends pots and kettles (a tinker) and is often just referred to as Tink. She is at times kind and helpful to Peter Pan, but at other times she is vindictive and badly behaved, this is said to be due to the fact that being so small she can't hold more than one feeling at a time, therefore a Tinkerbell costume could be perfect for anyone who has a split personality!

Fairy Halloween Costumes
Fancy wearing a Fairy Costume for Halloween? The good news is that not all fairies are always good, in fact there is one belief that a fairy is actually a demoted angel. The story goes that when the angels revolted, God ordered the gates to heaven should be shut and any angel who was in hell, became a devil, those in heaven remained angels an any who were caught in between became fairies. Some people even go as far to say that they were thrown out of heaven because they were not good enough to be angels, but not bad enough to be devils.
Tooth Fairy Costume
The story of the Tooth Fairy probably comes from a French fairy tale from the 18th century "La Bonne Petite Souris," where a mouse helps a good Queen by changing into a fairy and hiding under the pillow of an evil King to torment him and knock out all his teeth.
The current portrayal of the tooth fairy and the tradition of when a child looses one of their teeth and placing it under their pillow before going to sleep and in the morning finding a present or some money in the place of the tooth and then being told that it was the tooth fairy that exchanged the tooth for the gift has probably developed in order to give children something to look forward to when they lose a tooth, something they might otherwise have found worrisome.

Elf Costumes
Similar to a Fairy, an elf comes from Germanic mythology. They were originally nature and fertility gods who lived in forests, caves wells or springs. Elves (or elfs) are human like in form, often very beautiful and have magical powers.
Christmas Elfs
The modern folklore surrounding Christmas often includes a small elf with pointy ears and a green elf costume. A Christmas Elf works as Santa's helper and are similar to the dwarves of Norse mythology.
Other well known elf's include Snap, Crackle, and Pop from the Rice Krispies cereal and the Elves in The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Lord of the Rings Elf Costumes are also popular.
