What Can I Dress My Daughter In For World Book Day?

Okay, so the school is requesting you to send your pride and joy into class dressed as a character from a book, where do you start? It's not unusual for schools to have such requests, usually at short notice. Fortunately, we've come a long way since Andrew West's mum had to hand craft over several weeks a Superman costume with boxers instead of pants because he was embarrassed to wear his underwear on the outside of his costume. With our World Book Day costumes and fancy dress ideas for the girls, you'll be inspired, if nothing else.

This year World Book Day is going to be on Thursday March 5th and looks to be another great fun filled opportunity for your kids to get excited about the written word. I was going to put 'the printed word' however, with the advent of the iFad, iPlod and iPad, we're probably living in the tail-end era of books being something you can hold in you hand rather than a piece of glass and a bunch of wires.

3 Tips For Choosing A Girls Book Day Costume

  • Rather than searching Google for a specific character's costume, why not decide on a character that you want your daughter to dress as or find out who she wishes to become for Book Day and ask yourself what sort of outfit do they wear, what does it look like? You can easily find a generic queen, soldier or nurse costume and use it for your girl to become that character. For example, just because a costume might not say Peter Rabbit on the packaging, why can't you find a child rabbit costume and add a blue jacket, for example?
  • Be prepared! Don't leave it until the last minute to buy the costume. I know schools tend to give you less time than ideally needed but what's stopping you from making a plan once the ragged piece of paper finally finds its way home? Buy nice and early and chances are you'll get your first choice costume, postage will be cheaper than next day delivery and in the event the sizing is out a little you'll have time to get it returned and pick out one size bigger or one size smaller.
  • Make sure that your girl has a costume that they are content with. Include them in the process of shopping be it online or in a store. Merely presenting them with what they have to wear takes away from the bonding process, the feeling that their input is being taken on board and also gives a chance to test their decision making skills.
