Purim celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire. The story, told in the biblical Book of Esther, relates to Ahasuerus, the King of Persia, who married a beautiful Jewish girl called Esther. The Grand Vizier of the palace, Haman, plotted to destroy the Jewish people after a disagreement with Mordechai, Esther's uncle. Haman tried various schemes to eliminate Mordechai, and ultimately the entire Jewish population in Persia, but his plotting was foiled by Esthers intervention. All the exiled Jews in Persia were saved and Haman was hanged. One of the customs which evolved in commemoration of the story involves the wearing of masks and costumes in public celebration around the 14th day of Adar in the Hebrew calendar.
