Q: How are sizes determined? I am not sure if I would need large or x-large. My waist it 36.

You can look at the size chart for the costume that has all of the measurements to help get a much better fit. The large has the briefs as 33 1/2 Inches and the Xlarge has them listed as 37 1/2 Inches.
