If you’re working from home and dialling into a casual team meeting, doing one of the following will entertain the group and brighten up an otherwise boring meeting. Just be careful not to get fired!
1. PLACE RANDOM OBJECTS IN YOUR BACKGROUND
A very subtle but entertaining idea for any conference call where you want to have fun but not make it obvious is to place random objects in your background and see if anyone notices. The more random the better! Hunt around your house for the weirdest and wackiest pieces of furniture, toys, plants and ornaments. The trick is to act as though its completely normal and have all of your colleagues questioning why there’s a giant giraffe behind you, for example.
2. DRESS UP IN A FUNNY FANCY DRESS COSTUME
One of the easiest and most entertaining ideas for things to do on your next video call is to recycle an old Halloween costume or party outfit that’s been hiding in the wardrobe. Dress to impress and give your colleagues a good laugh. It’s a good way to lighten the mood during the team meeting! If you have a particularly impressive wardrobe, why not dress up in a different costume every call?

3. RELAX IN THE BATH WITH YOUR RUBBER DUCK
You’re in the comfort of your own home. Why not put your feet up and make it extra relaxing? Jump into a nice warm bath with your rubber duck and video call your friends or colleagues to your heart’s desire. Nothing reduces work stress like a nice soak in the tub! Just be sure to use plenty of bubble bath – you don’t want to flash everyone and end up on a call to HR!
4. INVITE YOUR PET TO JOIN YOU
Unless you have an office where you can bring your dog along for the day it’s an unusual event to have your puppy friend keeping you company at work. Sit your pet next to you on the conference call and make everyone smile. Who doesn’t love dogs? Cats, dogs, pet iguana’s and any other animals you have at home will be most welcome on webcam. Your colleagues might even join in and bring their furry friends along.
5. TAKE YOUR CALL IN THE GARDEN AND CHILL OUT IN THE SUN
You should still be able to get WiFi signal in the garden, so why not take your laptop outside and chill out in the sun? Lie on the grass, relax on your favourite lounger and embrace the outdoors life whilst working at the same time. Bonus points for wearing swimwear and sunglasses!
6. DIAL INTO THE CALL FROM AN UNUSUAL PLACE IN YOUR HOUSE
Most people would join a conference call from a desk, table or maybe their sofa, right? Confuse everyone by choosing completely random areas of your home to base yourself. All you need is your laptop! Some fun ideas include sitting on the bathroom floor, on a stool in the shower, inside an open fridge, underneath your bed or on inside a wardrobe or laundry room.
7. PRETEND YOU DON’T KNOW YOUR CAMERA IS SWITCHED ON AND DO SOMETHING EMBARRASSING
Have you seen those videos where someone leaves a call and forgets to switch their camera off, promptly doing something embarrassing such as picking their nose, scratching their bum or wearing far too little clothes down below? It’s one of the worst situations to find yourself in! Prank your colleagues by acting dumb and doing something stupid, pretending you don’t know your camera is still active.
8. SET A FUNNY PICTURE AS YOUR BACKGROUND IMAGE
Some conference call software’s allow you to change your background with a green-screen effect. Zoom is particularly good at this and everyone takes advantage by placing themselves in settings ranging from tropical rain forests, beaches and movie-sets, to outright hilarious places.

9. EMBRACE THE FREEDOM OF NOT HAVING TO WEAR TROUSERS
Long gone are the days where you have to get suited up to go to the office. Technically, all you need to do is make your top half presentable and let your legs fly free like nature intended! Carefully position your laptop webcam for the conference call and you’ll be good to go. No-one will notice that you’re comfortably chilling at home pant-less.
10. BRING YOUR KIDS ALONG AND PREPARE TO BE EMBARRASSED
The great thing about kids is that they’re so unpredictable. You never know what they’re going to do or say next! Some parents have found this out the hard way as they dial into their work call only to find their child smearing food on the walls in the background or saying something absolutely hilarious. Invite your kids into the room and let them run wild whilst you sit on webcam to your work group. Are you brave enough?

For work calls that are getting a little dull and need a spark of creativity, host a conference call party and invite all of your friends or colleagues to join you. 13. HAVE A PARTNER EMBARRASS YOU IN THE BACKGROUND
Working from home with your other half? Have them emerge into the background spring cleaning, dancing in their undies, singing or doing another activity to embarrass you. There are loads of clips online where husbands and wives unknowingly wander into the room when their partner is on a video call and laughter ensues.
14. ANSWER THE CALL FROM YOUR BED
Cosy up and work from the comfort of your own bed with your laptop and peek out from under the covers. Your colleagues will laugh at your blatant laziness but you won’t care; you’ll be nice and comfortable in your favourite place. For extra effect, wear an eye mask and your favourite PJ’s.
